How do you care for and clean your cowhide rug? They most definitely require a certain level of care and maintenance. With most rugs the initial process that professional rug cleaning companies will use is to soak the rug in a custom designed ‘bath’. This is definitely the wrong thing to do for your cowhide rug. Unless it is already ruined and you need to use a last ditch attempt to bring some life back to the rug, getting a cowhide rug completely wet is a bad idea.

Water Damage

In the event a Cowhide rug has been subjected to water damage such as a flooded house, an overflow of the septic water from a toilet or any other total water soaking it is going to need complete immersion into cleaning agents. This process will kill any bacteria, remove possible septic stains and generally deep wash the rug. In most circumstances such as described here, this is the only choice. However, provided this process is carried out correctly using the correct cleaning agents, minimising the soaking period, drying on air racks etc, the rug has a far better chance of recovery than if it was laid out on a concrete drive and cleaned with a high water pressure machine or even soaked in a bathtub of supermarket cleaning agents.

Rug Odours

Because cowhide rugs will generally hold odours much longer than most other rug compositions the cleaning process needs to be carried out knowing exactly how to remove those odours. Once things like pet urine, mould spores or smelly spills have settled deep onto the hide they must be professionally treated if you want to completely rid the rug of the unwanted odours. And to finish off, the cowhide rug should be sanitised with a product that will not be a health hazard to your family and will not damage the rug whilst remaining active for an extended period of time.
